We're already predicting next year's inevitable Call of Duty breaking these records. Thus is the cycle.

Let’s face facts: the Call of Duty franchise is a juggernaut. Activision has released sales figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s launch and, wouldn’t you know it, this game is now the highest grossing opening day launch in the history of entertainment across all mediums. That makes three years in a row that Call of Duty has topped itself, starting back in 2009 with Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pulled in $400 million in the first 24 hours of its release in the US and UK, pushing 6.5 million units into customers hands in the process. For comparison’s sake, last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops wrangled up $360 million by selling 5.6 million units on its opening day, while Modern Warfare 2 made $310 million with 4.7 million copies sold on launch day in 2009.

Oh, and these sales figures confirm that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold a million more copies in its first 24 hours than Battlefield 3 sold in its first five days. Again, Call of Duty can’t be stopped.

Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape,” said Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg. “It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.

“I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available now for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii (if you're the one person left on the planet that hasn't bought it yet). You can expect some write-ups on the single player campaign and multiplayer from us in the coming days.
