Thoughts on a wild weekend of basketball.

Does it get any better than this if you are a fan of basketball?

The Lakers are gone from the playoffs, having been swept by the Dallas Mavericks. The Memphis Grizzlies are still trucking along with a 2-1 lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Boston Celtics, after going down 2-0 to the Miami Heat, stormed back into the series with a dominating game three at home. Last, but not least, the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks are battling, evened up at 2 apiece.

With so much exciting basketball being played, I can't just pick one game to talk about so here are some thoughts of mine concerning what I saw this weekend.

  • The Bulls are a weak number 1 seed. They are not going to win it all when their point guard is taking over 30 shots a game. If they are going to have a chance, then they need to get better production from their bigs than they have so far.

  • The Dallas Mavericks are a great story so far but how long can you honestly expect them to keep shooting like they have been? In the deciding game 4 against the Lakers, the Mavs bench put up the exact same number as the entire Los Angeles team, 86. Dallas also made 20 threes in the game, an amazing number that isn't going to be duplicated on a game to game basis.

  • The Lakers may be down but they aren't done…unless you're talking about this years playoffs, which they are out of. This offseason is going to be crucial for the Lake Show. The popular consensus has Los Angeles going hard after Dwight Howard who will probably be more than willing to switch coasts. A Bynum/Howard swap would work for both teams, leaving L.A. With its most dominating interior presence since Shaq. A young beast like Howard, who is a proven super-star, would compliment the fading Kobe perfectly. Add in another shooter and the Lakers are back in the title hunt, no matter who is doing the coaching.

  • The Miami Heat looked soft and ineffective against Boston Saturday. A healthier Paul Pierce locked down LeBron while Kevin Garnett threw a dress on Chris Bosh and told him to get in the damn kitchen and make him a sandwich. But is this the real Heat or just an aberration? If the Celtics take game four then this series is over, Miami is done.

  • Will someone please knock some sense into Russell Westbrook! This dude is killing the Thunder and is the main reason they are down to Memphis 2-1. I watched the fourth quarter of Saturday's game and this guy might be a supreme talent, but his ego is going to get Oklahoma City booted from this playoffs. He is taking waaaaayyyy too many shots and is not distributing the ball at all. I lost count of the number of Thunder possessions that consisted mainly of Westbrook advancing the ball and shooting without even the hint of a pass. The Thunder has the two time NBA scoring champion and one of the best fourth quarter scorers in the game in Kevin Durant and Westbrook refuses to concede the ball or the spotlight to him in the games deciding moments. It's ludicrous!
