L.A. Noire Is So Big It Takes Up 3 Discs on 360

Ready. Set. Disc swap!

Here’s an interesting nugget of information. For those planning to buy L.A. Noire on Xbox 360, know that the game will come spread across three discs. For comparison's sake, on the PS3 L.A. Noire takes up an entire 25GB Blu-ray disc. That’s damn impressive. In fact, to my recollection, L.A. Noire is one of the only titles in the current generation of gaming that surpasses two discs (if I’m dead wrong let me know in the comments below).

L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game,” said Rockstar’s Jeronimo Barrera. “To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs.”

But don’t fret too much about this slight inconvenience that will get you up and out of your comfy gaming chair. The disc swaps will not be obnoxious, nor will you have to flip back and forth depending what section of Los Angeles you’re in. Instead, Rockstar and Team Bondi have been smart about the disc swap implementation.

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free,” said Barrera. “In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.

“Throughout development, we created lots of great cases, the bulk of which were central to the main story of Cole Phelps and his rise through the ranks of the LAPD, alongside other cases that felt more like strong stand-alone episodes. This gave us a powerful main story, and left us with quality extra content that we wanted to put out as DLC, that would slot seamlessly into the existing game.”

For the people who love to install their 360 games on their hard-drives (like me), it looks like L.A. Noire is going to take up a good chunk of space. So you better get cracking on deleting some of those useless avatar items you purchased before this behemoth drops on May 17.
