The extended editions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy are coming to Blu-Ray, so why not celebrate the home video release with a trip to a movie theater? That's right, AMC Theaters is going to theatrically release the extra-long (and in some cases unnecessarily long) version of Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy this June, over the course of three weeks (a la the Stars Wars special edition re-releases). TheOneRing had the scoop, with promises of more fabulous information to come. New footage? Previews of The Hobbit? It's worth keeping track of, and Crave Online is going to do exactly that thing.
Frankly, we're probably going to skip the special edition of Fellowship of the Ring, the film in which most of the extended material proved unnecessary (and the altered introduction screwed with the pacing too much for our tastes). We might even ignore the Return of the King while we're at it, because let's face it: The Two Towers benefited from the added footage the most. The Gondor flashback fleshed out both Boromir's and Faramir's characters to the extent that we're shocked the footage was cut at all, and Gimli finally got his due when we discovered that he won the bet at Helm's Deep. Gimli quickly devolved into comic relief over the second two films, and we appreciated the added moment that gave his character the respect he deserved.
Crave Online will see you at the movies this June!
