Sony NGP Potentially Delayed Due to Quake

Mother Nature, you're a son (daughter?) of a bitch...

It seems like the collateral damage from the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami continues to tally up. The devastation may even lead to the Sony NGP (Next Gen Portable) handheld being delayed into 2012.

While speaking with Bloomberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America President Jack Tretton mentioned that Sony is soon going to have to decide what they want to do with the handheld’s launch — delay or push forward. Tretton also mentioned an alternative that Sony is actively considering: release the Sony NGP in one region this year, while delaying the rest of the launch till 2012. "It may be the straw that says 'maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,'" Tretton said.

Unfortunately, Tretton did not reveal the one region he had in mind.

While this will come as sad news to those looking forward to the next iteration of the PSP, think of it with a positive spin: now the developers backing the NGP will have more time to polish their products… in theory.
